Our Sections

At 1st Mortimer Scout Group, we offer a full programme of activities for young people aged 5 through to adulthood. Each section is designed for a specific age group, allowing young people to take on new challenges, develop skills, and grow in confidence as they progress through the group.

Our sections provide a fun and supportive environment where young people can make friends, learn practical life skills, and take part in exciting activities both indoors and outdoors.

As members move through the sections, they gain more independence and take on greater challenges, helping them develop confidence, leadership, and teamwork.

Beavers (Ages 5–7)

Beavers are the youngest members of the group and are often a young person’s first experience of Scouting.

Beaver meetings are full of energy and fun. Young people take part in games, crafts, storytelling, and simple outdoor activities while learning how to work together as a team.

Beavers begin to develop confidence, social skills, and independence while making new friends and discovering the world around them.

Typical Beaver activities include:

  • Games and team challenges
  • Arts and crafts
  • Outdoor exploration
  • Learning basic skills
  • Earning badges and awards

Cubs (Ages 7–11)

Cubs build on the skills they learned as Beavers and begin to take part in more adventurous activities.

Cub meetings are designed to challenge young people while keeping things fun and engaging. Cubs work together in small teams, learn new practical skills, and take part in outdoor activities and camps.

Activities can include:

  • Camping trips
  • Cooking and outdoor skills
  • Hiking and navigation
  • Problem-solving challenges
  • Team games and competitions

Cubs develop independence, teamwork, and confidence while continuing to build friendships..

Scouts (Ages 11–15)

The Scout Troop offers bigger adventures and more responsibility. Scouts take part in a wide range of activities that help them develop leadership skills, resilience, and independence.

Scouts are encouraged to take an active role in planning activities and leading parts of the programme.

Activities often include:

  • Weekend camps and expeditions
  • Navigation and hiking
  • Bushcraft and survival skills
  • Outdoor cooking
  • Community projects
  • Team leadership opportunities

This section focuses on helping young people push themselves, try new challenges, and grow as individuals

Senior Scouts (aged 15-18)

This section focuses on preparing young people for adulthood while continuing to provide adventure and fun.

Activities may include:

  • Advanced outdoor activities
  • Expedition training

Senior Scouts develop valuable life skills while continuing to enjoy the social and adventurous aspects of the group.
